Spot Planes from RAF Lossiemouth

Lossiemouth is home to one of the UK’s largest & busiest RAF stations. It’s a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) station protecting UK airspace. Most weekdays you’ll be able to hear and see Typhoons, Poseidon P-8s and visiting aircraft over the town, particularly if you’re walking along West Beach

Visit the Lighthouse & Heritage Centre

Covesea Lighthouse is an iconic landmark. In summer, you can climb to the top for the best view in Lossie (please book in advance). There are giant caves below the lighthouse house, great fun to explore. Take a walk through Lossiemouth’s military history at the RAF Heritage Centre.

Look for wildlife

Dolphins, seals and even whales are regular visitors, and can often be spotted from the shore. The North 58 boat trips will get you closer. The Lossie estuary is a haven for waders and ducks. In summer, look for ospreys hunting along the river. See red squirrels in the woods!

Take to the water

Try your hand at paddleboarding or surfing, hire and tuition is available all year round. Wild swimming is very popular. A good spot is the bay in front of the West Beach car park below the golf club. Beware of strong currents on East Beach.

Watch the sunset from West Beach

Summer sunsets can be dramatic as the sun sinks behind the mountains of Caithness across the water. West Beach is a great place to walk, particularly at low tide when you’ll see reflections of the sky in the wet sand and you can walk all the way to the lighthouse.

Walk for miles along East Beach

East Beach is one of the most beautiful in Scotland. Although it can be busy on a fine day, it’s rarely crowded. Go early morning and you’ll have it all to yourself. The new bridge was opened in 2022, the wooden pillars from the old bridge are still standing.

Experience the Northern Lights

With our dark skies to the north, Lossiemouth is one of the best places in the UK to see the Aurora Borealis. The aurora is most likely to be seen in the winter months. Check online for real-time alerts. West Beach car park is a popular viewpoint.

Visit the Fisheries & Community Museum

The once busy fishing harbour is now a modern marina. The museum on the quay hosts a fascinating range of exhibits about the fishing, the railway, Ramsay MacDonald, and other aspects of our local heritage. Open every day in the summer but Sunday.

Play a round of golf

Moray Golf Club is home to two fine links golf courses. The 18th on the Championship Old Course is considered to be one of the finest in Scotland. The New Course is shorter but tricky nevertheless. Covesea Links, 2 miles west, has a pay & play 9-hole course. Nearby, Wee Links has pitch & putt, driving range and crazy golf.

Get on your bike

Mountain biking along the coastal trails, gravel biking through the woods, road cycling longer distances or just a balance bike in the park, there’s plenty for cyclists in the area. Bikes, including e-bikes, can be hired from Bike Revolution on Shore Street.

Getting Here

Lossiemouth is on the Moray coast, approximately 40 miles east of Inverness and 70 miles northwest of Aberdeen. The A96 is the main road between these two cities. 

Travelling by bus or train, head to Elgin for a connecting bus service to Lossiemouth.
